Omschrijving

La Perricholi - in werkelijkheid Micaela Villegas - was de belangrijkste theaterdame van Lima in de jaren 1770, toen Peru een Spaanse kolonie was. Haar leven werd gefictionaliseerd in een eenakter van Prosper Merimee en er werd een libretto gemaakt waarop Offenbach zijn opera bouffe La Perichole creëerde, een weerspiegeling van de creatieve manie in Parijs in die tijd voor Spaans leven en kunst. La Perichole en Piquillo, haar minnaar en lotgenoot, zijn verarmde straatzangers. Ondertussen wil de onderkoning Don Andrès de Ribeira haar tot zijn geliefde maken. In muziek met levendige ritmes, waaronder bolero's, seguidillas en rijke aria's, speelt Offenbach hun liefde uit tegen een breder maatschappelijk kader.
