Het album Minkus: La Bayadère door Pavel Sorokin, uitgevoerd door het Orkest van het Mikhailovsky Theater en uitgebracht op Blu-ray, is een moderne registratie van een geliefde klassieker uit het balletrepertoire. Dit werk vertegenwoordigt de hoogtijdagen van het romantisch klassiek ballet zoals zich dat ontwikkelde aan het einde van de negentiende eeuw in Rusland.
Ludwig Minkus was een van de toonaangevende componisten voor het romantische ballet, bekend om zijn toegankelijke melodieën en dramatische kracht. In deze opname dirigeert Pavel Sorokin het Mikhailovsky Theaterorkest, waarbij de kenmerkende rijkdom van Minkus’ orkestratie tot zijn recht komt, met een opvallend heldere balans tussen de strijkers en het blazersensemble.
De choreografie van deze productie is van Nacho Duato, gebaseerd op het oorspronkelijke werk van Marius Petipa. Daarmee krijgt de traditionele balletstijl van Petipa een hedendaagse duiding, zonder dat het typisch romantische karakter van het verhaal en de muziek verloren gaat. De technische perfectie van het Mikhailovsky Ballet en het geslaagde samenspel met een visueel sterke enscenering dragen bij aan een meeslepende kijk- en luisterervaring.
Dit album verscheen op Blu-ray en is kenmerkend voor de klassieke muziekstroming van het romantiek, met nadruk op emotionele expressie, rijke melodieën en een orkestrale luisterrijkdom typisch voor de grote balletproducties uit deze periode.
