Het album "The Beggar’s Opera", uitgebracht op dvd in 2021, is een uitvoering door Les Arts Florissants onder leiding van dirigent William Christie van de gelijknamige ballad-opera van John Gay, met muziek van Johann Christoph Pepusch. Deze productie valt binnen de barokke muziekstroming en staat bekend als een van de meest invloedrijke Engelse ballad-opera’s, een genre dat populaire melodieën, parodie en sociale satire combineert, en wordt vaak omschreven als de voorloper van de moderne musical. De opname werd gemaakt in het Théâtre des Bouffes du Nord in Parijs en presenteert een frisse, eigentijdse en geestige benadering van het oorspronkelijke werk. Naast de muzikale leiding van William Christie speelt het ensemble van Les Arts Florissants op historische instrumenten, wat resulteert in een karakteristieke barokke klankkleur.
In deze versie staan naast het orkest verschillende solisten en acteurs centraal, waarmee de productie het satirische en maatschappijkritische karakter van het stuk onderstreept. Regisseur Robert Carsen, bekend om zijn vernieuwende ensceneringen, zorgt met zijn speelse en theatrale aanpak voor een moderne insteek zonder de historische wortels van de opera uit het oog te verliezen. De voorstelling staat zo niet alleen in de traditie van de Engelse barokopera, maar geeft een actuele reflectie op thema’s als corruptie, hebzucht en sociale ongelijkheid, waarmee het werk, eeuwen na de première, niets aan kracht en relevantie heeft verloren.
