Jean-Baptiste Lully's Atys, een muzikale tragédie, werd bekend als de 'opera van de koning' omdat Lodewijk XIV er een voorliefde voor had. Het werk getuigt van de hoofse verfijning van de Zonnekoning en van zijn streven om van Frankrijk het centrum van de Europese artistieke cultuur te maken.
