Omschrijving

Zowel Pizzetti als Stravinsky werden aangetrokken tot het onderwerp Oedipus Rex, maar in een heel verschillende context. De 24-jarige Pizzetti kreeg de opdracht om drie orkestrale preludes te schrijven voor gebruik in een theaterproductie. Hij schreef met een sober gevoel voor orkestrale kleur, verstoken van impressionisme dat een voorkeur heeft voor het vaag archaïsche, met modale verbuigingen. Stravinsky's opera-oratorium is geschreven in zijn neoklassieke stijl, met een centrale rol voor de verteller. In een grimmige, gestileerde en formele setting voegen het gebruik van Latijn en Stravinsky's opdracht aan de hoofdpersonen om maskers te dragen tijdloze, onpersoonlijke elementen toe aan een werk dat culmineert in catharsis.
