Voortbouwend op het succes van Cavalleria rusticana kreeg Pietro Mascagni's commedia lirica L'amico Fritz bij de première in Rome in 1891 zeven toegiften en vijfendertig keer het doek. Het verhaal, dat door critici wordt beschouwd als een van Mascagni's beste opera's, is dat van een liefdesdriehoek tussen de rijke Fritz Kobus en Suzel, dochter van een van zijn huurders, die samen het beroemde 'Kersenduet' zingen in akte II. Deze productie keerde voor het eerst sinds 1941 terug naar het Teatro del Maggio Musicale in Florence en werd geprezen om haar uitstekende cast en verbazingwekkend effectieve moderne setting.
